Progressive Dialer Meaning: Calls Tied to Agent Availability, and the Power Overlap

A progressive dialer waits for an agent to become free, then starts exactly one call for that agent. The name overlaps with power dialing, and vendors do not all draw the line in the same place.

Progressive dialer meaning

A progressive dialer is defined by its trigger. Contact centre software tracks each agent through states such as available, on a call and wrap-up. The instant an agent flips to available, the system takes the next record from the campaign and dials it for that agent, and only that agent. The ratio is fixed at 1 call per available agent, so an answered call always has a listener and the dialer never has to forecast anything. The cost is ringing time: the agent waits through every no-answer and busy tone, a cost a parallel dialer tries to cut by ringing several lines at once. On a phone running The Auto Dialer the same trigger is built from two events: the current call ends, and the gap you configured runs out. Only then does the next number in the queue ring. An owner can lock that gap so a team works at one agreed pace, which is the closest a handset gets to a supervisor's wrap-up timer.

Progressive dialer vs power dialer

The two terms are swapped freely in sales writing, and a buyer should ask what a vendor means. The table sets out the usual readings.

How the progressive and power labels are used
TermMeaningWhere you see it
Progressive dialingOne call per agent, started when the agent's state turns availableContact centre campaign modes
Power dialing, one lineThe next call begins once the previous one ends; same ratio as progressiveSales apps and phone-based dialers
Power dialing, fixed ratioTwo or three lines per agent at a set multiple, with no forecastSome older contact centre systems
Agent stateAvailable, talking, wrap-up or away, as the platform records itSupervisor wallboards
Wrap-up timerSeconds allowed for notes before the agent is set available againCampaign settings
Call gapThe handset equivalent: a pause between hang-up and the next dialPhone dialer settings

The one-line reading is the one this site uses. More on it under what a power dialer does, and the head-to-head with forecasting is in predictive dialer vs progressive dialer. The mode that leaves the start of each call to the caller is the preview dialer, and the full set is under types of dialers.

Progressive dialer example

Illustrative round numbers only, not data from a customer.

A team lead at a training institute in Nairobi runs 6 telecallers on course enquiries. She assigns 120 leads to each caller's pending queue and locks the gap at 15 seconds, enough for a status and a short remark. Each caller's phone starts the next call only when the last one is closed, so nobody answers to silence, and the 15-second lock keeps the slowest caller from drifting to a minute between calls. At day's end the owner's view shows each caller's calls, and the Done tab shows which leads were closed by the dialer and which were marked done by hand. Leads one caller cannot finish can be transferred to another, with the transfer history kept.

Progressive dialer limits

The Auto Dialer reproduces the progressive trigger on each phone, but it is not a contact centre platform. There is no shared agent pool, so an answered call cannot be routed to whichever agent is free; each phone dials its own queue. There is no inbound and outbound blending, no automated machine detection and no recording of its own. A floor that needs those should look at a cloud contact centre product; the outsourcing angle is covered in dialer for BPO. For an owner who mainly wants assigned queues, locked pacing and the team's call logs, auto dialer software for owners describes the management side.

Progressive dialer FAQ

11 questions, answered

What is the difference between a progressive and a predictive dialer?

A progressive dialer waits for an agent to be free and then starts one call for that agent. A predictive dialer starts calls before agents are free, betting on how many will be answered. Progressive leaves agents hearing rings; predictive leaves some answered calls with no agent.

Is a progressive dialer the same as a power dialer?

Often, but not always. Many vendors use the two names for one-call-per-agent dialing. Some contact centre platforms keep "power" for ringing a set number of lines, say 2 or 3, for each agent, and that version can abandon calls. Ask the vendor how many lines ring per agent.

Is The Auto Dialer a progressive dialer?

It behaves like one on a single phone. The Auto Dialer rings the next lead only after the previous call has ended and the set gap has run out, so there is always a person ready when someone answers. It has no shared agent pool or call routing.

Which progressive dialer runs on an Android phone?

The Auto Dialer runs progressive-style sessions on Android and on iPhone. Each team member works their own assigned queue from their own SIM, and the owner can lock the gap between calls so every caller keeps the same pace.

Can a progressive dialer cause abandoned calls?

In its pure form, no, because the call starts only once an agent is available. Abandonment creeps in only if a platform lets one agent have more than one call ringing, which turns it into a ratio or predictive setup.

What is progressive dialer software?

Software, usually part of a contact centre platform, that watches agent states and launches one call from the campaign list the instant an agent turns available. Configuration covers the list, a wrap-up timer, ring timeout and retry rules; there is no forecast to set.

Does the agent see customer details before a progressive call connects?

In most setups, yes: the record appears as the dial starts, so the agent reads while it rings. With The Auto Dialer, the caller’s screen shows the name, lead status and last remark for the number being rung, even over the lock screen.

Is progressive dialing the same as automatic dialing?

It is one form of it. Automatic dialing covers every mode in which software starts calls from a list; progressive is the mode that ties each call to a single available agent. Recorded broadcasts and forecasting engines are automatic as well, yet behave very differently.

What is a wrap-up timer in progressive dialing?

It is the number of seconds an agent gets after hanging up to finish notes before the platform marks them available and dials again. Set it too short and notes suffer; too long and agents sit idle. On a phone-based dialer the matching control is the pause between calls.

Is a progressive dialer good for a small team?

It suits small teams well because it needs no traffic volume: each agent’s next call starts only when that agent is ready, and even one person can run it. The trade-off is that every agent hears every unanswered ring on their own list.

Can a progressive dialer retry unanswered numbers?

Yes, most let you schedule another attempt. The Auto Dialer offers 1 to 3 retries, run immediately, after a chosen delay or when the whole list is done, plus a separate single-number redial where you choose the number of tries and the gap.
