Outbound Dialer Types From Manual Click-to-Call to Predictive Campaigns, Explained
An outbound dialer is any system that places calls out to a list. The types range from one click per call to software that rings several numbers per agent. The Auto Dialer is one of them, built for a phone.
Outbound dialer meaning
An outbound dialer is the part of a calling system that decides which number to ring next and starts the call, so that a person spends the day talking rather than dialling. That handover is the core of auto dialing. Every type answers the same two questions differently: how many lines are open for each caller, and when does the caller see the record? A manual or click-to-call setup opens one line when the caller asks. A preview dialer shows the record first and waits. A power dialer opens one line as soon as the caller is free. A predictive dialer opens several per agent and holds on to whichever person picks up. The Auto Dialer is a power-type outbound dialer that runs on an Android phone or iPhone, places calls over the caller's own SIM, and draws each session from one of 5 places: today's due follow-ups, a team member's assigned leads, numbers in the call log, an imported file or any saved lead filter.
Outbound dialer types
| Type | Lines open per caller | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual or click to call | One, started by the caller each time | A few priority calls a day |
| Preview | One, after the caller has read the record | High-value accounts that need preparation |
| Power or progressive | One, started automatically when the caller is free | Small teams working their own leads |
| Predictive | Several, paced by statistics across many agents | Large centres with big, low-answer lists |
| Parallel | Several for one rep at the same moment | Single reps on very cold B2B lists |
| Voice broadcast | Many, with a recording instead of a person | Consented alerts and reminders |
Each type has its own page: preview dialer, power dialer and predictive dialer, with recorded calls under voice broadcasting and the full family on types of dialers. Two comparisons settle the common naming muddles: auto dialer vs power dialer shows why one word names the family and the other a member, and auto dialer vs manual dialer measures the time saved over typing each number.
Outbound dialer software vs a phone app
Most outbound dialer software lives in the cloud: callers sit at computers with headsets, calls travel over internet telephony, and the platform bills for seats and minutes. That model suits several-lines-per-agent dialing, recorded messages and inbound queues. A phone app takes the opposite route: the handset is the workstation, the call goes over the mobile network, and the software's job is the list, the pace and the record. The trade-offs are set out in detail under the VoIP auto dialer comparison. Teams that sit at a desk but want calls to go out from their phones can use click to call from Chrome, which sends a number on the computer screen to the phone.
Outbound dialer campaign steps
- Load the list: import a file, connect a Google Sheet or filter the leads you already hold.
- Set the pace: ring limit, gap between calls and retry rule for unanswered numbers.
- Assign the work: each team member gets a pending queue of leads.
- Dial: the session moves through the queue with skip, pause and stop always on screen.
- Record: once the call ends, the after-call sheet takes the outcome, a note and the next callback date.
- Review: the owner reads team call logs and analytics, and numbers that never connected gather in lost leads.
Before planning the day around a campaign, estimate it with the calls per hour calculator.
Outbound dialer example
Invented scenario using rounded figures for illustration.
A travel agency in Dubai receives 120 holiday enquiries over a weekend. On Monday the manager imports the sheet, assigns 40 leads to each of three consultants and sets a 10-second gap. Each consultant starts a session on their phone. By early afternoon all 120 numbers have been dialled once; 70 were reached, 30 of those asked for a quote, and every quote request carries a dated follow-up. The 50 unreached numbers are retried after the list, and each received the outgoing-call WhatsApp message with the agency's name.
Outbound dialer limits
The Auto Dialer keeps one line per caller. It cannot pace several calls per agent, leave an automated voicemail drop, detect answering machines or run an inbound queue, and for a centre that needs those, a cloud platform is the right purchase; see auto dialer options for a call centre. One-line dialing does mean no abandoned calls (an abandoned call rate of zero) and no silent pauses after "hello". Whether your documents say outbound dialer or outbound dialler is a matter of house style, explained under dialer or dialler.
Outbound dialer FAQ
11 questions, answered
What is outbound dialing?
Outbound dialing is placing calls from your organisation to customers or prospects, rather than receiving their calls. Sales follow-ups, renewal reminders, payment calls and survey calls are all outbound; the dialing itself may be done by hand or by software working through a list.
What are outbound calls in a BPO?
In a BPO, outbound calls are campaigns run for a client: selling, collecting, verifying or surveying a list the client supplies. The firm chooses a dialer type per process, often predictive for large sales lists and preview for sensitive accounts, and reports outcomes back to the client.
What are the types of outbound dialer?
The usual list is manual or click-to-call, preview, power (also called progressive), predictive and parallel, plus recorded-message broadcasting. They differ mainly in how many lines each caller has open and whether a person reviews the record before the call starts.
Is The Auto Dialer an outbound dialer?
Yes. The Auto Dialer is an outbound dialer of the power type: it works down a list number by number over the mobile line of whoever holds the handset, starting the next call only after the caller has finished with the last one.
Which outbound dialer works without a computer or headset?
The Auto Dialer runs entirely on an Android phone or iPhone, so a caller needs only the phone and its SIM. Lists come from files, Google Sheets, the call log or assigned leads, and the outcome of each call is saved on the phone as it happens.
Is outbound calling the same as cold calling?
No. Cold calling is one kind of outbound calling, aimed at people with no prior contact. Outbound also covers returning enquiries, renewals, payment reminders, delivery confirmations and surveys, most of which reach people who expect to hear from you.
What is the difference between inbound and outbound calling?
Inbound calls are started by customers ringing the business, so the work is answering, routing and queue time. Outbound calls are started by the business, so the work is choosing whom to ring, when and how fast. Dialers are outbound tools; queues and menus serve inbound.
Can outbound calls be recorded?
On most systems, technically yes, but rules on telling the other party vary by country, so check locally. The Auto Dialer leaves recording to the handset: on Android it pulls in files the phone already made, and a recording saved elsewhere can be shared to it.
What is an outbound dialer campaign?
A campaign is one list worked toward one goal under one set of rules: who is called, in what order, at what pace, with which retry policy and outcome codes. Keeping lists apart by goal, such as renewals separate from fresh enquiries, keeps the results readable.
Which number do people see when an outbound dialer calls them?
It depends on the route. Cloud dialers show a number rented from their telephony provider, sometimes local to the person called. A SIM-based dialer such as The Auto Dialer shows the SIM’s own mobile number, the same one customers see when you ring them by hand.
How do you measure an outbound dialer’s results?
Track dials, connected calls, conversations of a useful length and outcomes per hour, plus how many leads ended with a dated next step. In The Auto Dialer, analytics rings show connected, missed and unique calls by period, and a minimum call length stops brief connections counting as worked.
