Dialer or Dialler: The American and British Spellings and Which One to Use

Dialer or dialler? Both are correct. One follows American spelling and the other British, and the meaning never changes. The Auto Dialer explains the rule and how to choose.

Dialer or dialler difference

Dialer and dialler differ by one letter and by nothing else. The difference comes from a general rule rather than from telephones: when a word ends in a single vowel followed by l, British English doubles the l before a suffix such as -ed, -ing or -er, and American English usually does not. So British writers have dialled, dialling and dialler, as they have travelled and cancelled; American writers have dialed, dialing and dialer, as they have traveled and canceled. Neither spelling is a mistake. Wiktionary, for example, lists dialler simply as an "alternative form of dialer". When Google's autocomplete was checked on 4 October 2026, it offered both "dialer or dialler" and "dialler or dialer", which shows people in several countries asking the same question. The Auto Dialer writes dialer in its name and product, and British spelling elsewhere on this site.

Dialer or dialler meaning

Whichever way it is spelled, a dialler is something that dials telephone numbers. On a phone it is the keypad app or a click to call link; in a sales office it is software that calls a list, from the simplest one-at-a-time outbound dialer to predictive systems in large centres that rely on answering machine detection. The vocabulary that goes with it, such as auto dial, redial and call disposition, is gathered on the auto dialing terms page, and the different kinds of system are compared under types of dialers. Even the naming inside the family trips people up; auto dialer vs power dialer untangles two labels that are often used as if they were one.

Dialer or dialler for your writing

The one firm rule is consistency inside a document, with names left exactly as their owners spell them. A British contract can speak of "the dialler" and still name The Auto Dialer with one l.

Dialer or dialler in search

People search with both spellings, and autocomplete offers each as a suggestion for the other, so writers do not need to repeat both forms everywhere. Write for the reader in front of you, and mention the other spelling once where it helps someone who typed it to recognise the page. Telephony terms with deeper differences than spelling, such as internet calling versus SIM calling, are explained under auto dialer VoIP.

Dialer or dialler example

A made-up example with round numbers, to show the choice in practice.

A recruiter in Leeds writes a 300-word advert for a telesales role. She uses British spelling throughout, so the duties read "making about 60 calls a day on an auto dialler" and "logging numbers dialled". In the skills list she adds "experience with dialer software" once, because applicants trained on American-built tools search that way, and she keeps the employer's software name exactly as written.

Whichever spelling, a dialer or dialler logs each call, with missed and connected filters. Drawing of an app screen, not a screenshot

Dialer or dialler limits

Spelling changes nothing about what a dialer is allowed to do. A dialler used in the United Kingdom is still bound by PECR and the Telephone Preference Service, as set out under auto dialer rules in the UK; an American-spelled dialer calling British numbers is bound by exactly the same rules.

Dialer or dialler FAQ

11 questions, answered

What is the difference between dialer and dialler?

Only the spelling. Dialer, with one l, is the American form; dialler, with two, is the British form used across much of the Commonwealth. Both name the same thing: a device, app or person that dials telephone numbers.

What does dialler mean?

A dialler is something that dials phone numbers: the keypad app on a mobile, a piece of call centre software that dials lists, or older hardware that dialled alarm or modem connections. In a sales office it almost always means calling software.

Is it auto dialer or auto dialler?

Both. Auto dialer is the American spelling and the one most product names use; auto dialler follows British rules. Pick the spelling your readers expect, use it consistently, and keep any product or brand name exactly as its owner writes it.

Does The Auto Dialer use the British spelling dialler anywhere?

No. The Auto Dialer keeps the one-l spelling everywhere because it is part of the product’s name, even though the rest of this site uses British spelling such as organise and centre. The app is the same whichever spelling you search for.

Which auto dialler works on a mobile phone in the UK?

The Auto Dialer runs on Android phones and iPhones in the UK as anywhere else, calling a list one number at a time over the phone’s own SIM. UK calling rules, such as the Telephone Preference Service, still apply to the calls you make.

What is a dialler app?

On a phone, the dialler app is the keypad and calling screen used to place calls, with recents and contacts beside it. Replacement dialler apps take over that role; The Auto Dialer does so on Android, keeping ordinary calls, contacts and history while adding list calling and lead records.

How do you spell dialler in American English?

With one l: dialer. American spelling keeps a single l in dialed, dialing and dialer, while British spelling doubles it to dialled, dialling and dialler. Both spellings refer to exactly the same thing, so only the audience decides which to use.

Is autodialer one word or two?

All three forms appear in print: autodialer, auto-dialer and auto dialer. You will meet the closed form in legal and technical texts and the split form in many product names and adverts. None is wrong; choose one and keep it consistent, leaving brand names as their owners write them.

What is a dialler pad?

It is the on-screen number keypad, also written dialpad or dial pad, where digits are typed before a call. In The Auto Dialer the keypad also searches contacts and leads as you type, so a few digits or letters bring up the person you want.

What does a dialler manager do?

In a contact centre, a dialler manager runs the outbound dialling system: loading and cleaning lists, setting campaign pacing and retry rules, watching abandonment and connect figures, and keeping do-not-call data current. The British-spelled title describes the same role as a dialer administrator.

Why does British English double the l in dialler?

It follows a general British rule: a word ending in a single vowel plus l doubles the l before a suffix beginning with a vowel, wherever the stress falls. American English usually doubles only when the final syllable is stressed, as in compelled, so dial gives dialer there.
