Dialer for Pixel Phones: Replacing Google's Phone App for Business Calls
A dialer for Pixel phones has to stand next to one of the best-known phone apps there is. Here is what changes when The Auto Dialer takes over calls, and what stays with Google.
Dialer for Pixel business calling
The Auto Dialer on a Pixel trades Google's consumer calling features for a sales workflow: it holds the default phone role, calls a list of leads from the Pixel's SIM, and records each outcome against the person, ready for the next follow-up. Google documents the switch directly. Its Pixel help page, read on 4 October 2026, gives the route Settings › Apps › Default apps and notes the steps work on Android 14 and up. Pixels are also the easiest Android phones for background work; dontkillmyapp.com rates them the least likely to stop an app. The trade-off is elsewhere. Call Screen, which Google lists for Pixel phones with automatic screening in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US, is part of Google's Phone app. Before switching, decide which matters more on this phone: screening unknown callers, or working a lead list.
Dialer for Pixel as the default phone app
- From the Settings app, open Apps.
- Choose Default apps.
- Tap Phone app and choose The Auto Dialer.
- Accept the confirmation. Google's Phone app stays installed.
Google writes these steps for Android 14 and up; on an older Pixel the route may differ, and the exact wording varies by version. The Auto Dialer requests the role itself on first launch, which is how most people make the change. More on the role is in how default dialers work on Android.
Dialer for Pixel background usage settings
Pixel's per-app battery choice has three settings, found under Settings › Apps › See all apps › The Auto Dialer › App battery usage › Allow background usage:
- Optimized. Google's recommendation for most apps. Best for: everything except the apps you rely on to ring.
- Unrestricted. No limits on background battery use. Best for: a work dialer with callback alarms.
- Restricted. Background use is limited and notifications may be delayed. Never choose this for a dialer.
Adaptive Battery, under Battery › Battery Saver, can stay on; the per-app Unrestricted setting is enough. Motorola phones run a near-stock Android too, and the Motorola dialer setup uses the same App battery usage screen, plus one Motorola-only option. Stricter battery managers need more steps, as the guides to a dialer for Samsung, a dialer for Xiaomi and a dialer for OnePlus show.
Dialer for Pixel setup steps
| Step | Where on Pixel | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Take over calls | Apps › Default apps › Phone app | Less than a minute |
| Background usage | App battery usage › Allow background usage › Unrestricted | About 1 minute |
| Alarm and notification prompts | Shown by The Auto Dialer at first launch | A minute or two |
| Business SIM or eSIM line | The app's SIM setting on dual-line Pixels | Seconds |
| Screening decision | Test an unknown-number call before going live | A few minutes |
Call screening and a dialer for Pixel phones
Pixel call screening is a Google Phone app feature that answers unknown callers for you and shows why they are calling. Google's page does not say whether it keeps working when another app holds the phone role, so treat it as something that may stay behind, and test it. The choice in practice:
- Keep Google's Phone app as default. Screening and Google's caller features stay. Best for: phones that mostly receive calls from strangers. The Auto Dialer can still run in CRM team mode beside it, opening the after-call sheet after each call.
- Make The Auto Dialer the default. List dialing, full-screen lead cards on the lock screen, remarks and follow-ups. Best for: phones used to call people who asked to hear from you.
The Auto Dialer does flag spam from other users' reports and names callers from your own leads and contacts first, which covers part of what screening is used for, though it does not answer calls for you.
Dialer for Pixel example: a recruiter
Illustration with round numbers, not a customer's figures.
A recruiter in London uses a Pixel to call about 25 shortlisted candidates a day. Most of her calls are outgoing to people who applied, so she makes The Auto Dialer the default and accepts losing call screening on that phone. Each call shows the candidate's last remark, and unanswered numbers go to the lost leads list for one more try on Friday. Her personal number, with screening, stays on a second phone. Recruiters weighing a phone dialer against a desk setup can compare SIM dialing with cloud calling or the CRM dialer approach.
Dialer for Pixel limits
A Pixel still carries a single SIM call at any moment, and the app cannot change that. If your work depends on Google's own call features, keep them and use CRM team mode. Pixel owners working UK lists should also read the UK calling rules before dialing. Other brands are on the Android dialer hub.
Dialer for Pixel FAQ
11 questions, answered
Which dialer for Pixel phones fits a sales team?
The Auto Dialer fits a sales team on Pixel: it replaces Google’s Phone app as default, dials assigned leads from each person’s SIM, and rolls every call up to the owner’s team call log with statuses and remarks.
Is The Auto Dialer a dialer for Pixel?
Yes. The Auto Dialer runs on Google Pixel phones as the default phone app, following the Android 14 and later Default apps route, and adds list dialing, lead cards, follow-up alarms and WhatsApp messages after calls.
Do I lose Call Screen if I change the default phone app?
Call Screen is a feature of Google’s Phone app, and Google’s help page describes it inside that app without saying it works under another default. Test it on your Pixel; if screening matters more than list dialing, keep Google’s app as default.
Should a dialer be Unrestricted or Optimized on a Pixel?
Google recommends Optimized for most apps. A dialer whose job is ringing callback alarms is the exception worth making: set it to Unrestricted under App battery usage, and leave every other app on Optimized.
Can I switch back to Google’s Phone app later?
Yes. Pick Google’s app again from the Phone app entry under Default apps. Nothing is uninstalled when the default changes, and the call history kept by The Auto Dialer stays in its own records and backup.
Should Adaptive Battery be on or off on a Pixel?
It can stay on. Google says Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps so those used less often run less, and warns it may delay notifications. Giving the dialer Unrestricted background usage keeps its reminders out of that, while the rest of the Pixel keeps the saving.
Where is Adaptive Battery on a Pixel?
Google’s Pixel help gives Settings, Battery, Battery Saver, Adaptive Battery, where Use Adaptive Battery is switched on or off. The per-app choice that matters for a dialer lives elsewhere: Settings, Apps, See all apps, the app, App battery usage, Allow background usage.
How do I clear a default app on a Pixel?
Open Settings, Apps, tap the app you no longer want as default, then Open by default and Clear default preferences. Google notes the Pixel will then ask which app to use next time. For the phone role, simply select another app under Default apps, Phone app.
Is Pixel call screening available in India?
Google’s Phone app help lists India for manual screening on the Pixel 10 and 11 series, while automatic screening is listed for Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. In every country it is a feature of Google’s Phone app, so weigh it before handing the phone role to another app.
Can a Pixel run The Auto Dialer without replacing Google’s Phone app?
Yes, in CRM team mode. Google’s app keeps the phone role, so Call Screen and its other features stay, while The Auto Dialer opens its after-call sheet once each call ends. Hands-free list dialing does need the phone role, so that part requires making it the default.
What does Restricted battery do to an app on a Pixel?
Restricted is the tightest of the three App battery usage choices: background use is limited and notifications may arrive late. If a Pixel dialer misses callback alarms, open its App battery usage page, and if it shows Restricted, change it to Unrestricted and test with a reminder a few minutes ahead.
