Answering Machine Detection: How AMD Guesses, Where It Fails, and the Alternatives

Answering machine detection lets a dialer guess whether a person or a voicemail picked up. The Auto Dialer does not use it, and this page explains why, and what replaces it.

Answering machine detection meaning

Answering machine detection, usually shortened to AMD, is an auto dialing function that analyses the opening audio of an answered call and labels it human, machine or unknown. It exists because of how cloud dialers work: when software dials ahead of its agents, nobody is listening at the moment of answer, so the system needs a quick way to sort live people from mailboxes before it spends an agent's time. That sorting takes time, and the time matters. Canada's CRTC rules count a call as abandoned when no live telemarketer comes on the line within two seconds, so any listening period eats into that small window. The Auto Dialer sits outside this problem: one call per phone, placed while the caller holds the line, means a human ear judges every answer from the first word. The trade-off is that the caller hears every voicemail greeting too.

Answering machine detection methods

Most detectors combine some of these signals, and each one fails in a predictable way:

Answering machine detection accuracy

The weak point is not that detection fails sometimes; it is what happens when it does. A false negative wastes a few seconds of an agent's time. A false positive treats a real customer like a mailbox, which means a hang-up or a recording played at a person who is waiting to speak. That is why a centre that cares about complaint risk tunes its detector towards passing doubtful calls to agents, and why AMD is tied so closely to the abandoned call rate that regulators watch. In Britain, where the tool is usually spelled dialler (see dialer or dialler), the telecoms regulator's 2016 statement on misuse puts it bluntly: “Calling parties should not make silent or abandoned calls”. The details are on the page about auto dialer rules in the UK, and the Canadian two-second test is covered under auto dialer use in Canada. This is general information, not legal advice.

Answering machine detection alternatives

Without AMD, the work it did has to be done another way. The Auto Dialer handles each part with settings that do not need a guess:

Teams that still want a recorded message for voicemails should read about the auto dialer with voicemail drop and its consent rules first.

Answering machine detection in practice

Made-up morning with tidy figures, to illustrate; no customer data.

A telesales caller in Kuala Lumpur works 80 renewal numbers in a morning. Say 20 calls reach a voicemail greeting. With no AMD, she hears each greeting, which costs perhaps 10 seconds a time: about 3 to 4 minutes over the whole morning. She hangs up, the minimum call length leaves those 20 leads open, the after-call WhatsApp tells each customer she rang, and the retry rule calls them again after the rest of the list. No customer was ever left listening to silence, and no lead was wrongly closed.

Without answering machine detection, an automatic WhatsApp after the call tells the customer who rang Drawing of an app screen, not a screenshot

Answering machine detection limits

If your operation runs many agents on a cloud platform and dials several lines per agent, AMD is part of that world and you will want a vendor that lets you tune it; a phone app is the wrong tool. The predictive dialer page explains why those systems need detection at all. For a team calling its own enquiries and customers one at a time, the few seconds spent hearing a greeting are a small price for never hanging up on a real person. Recorded announcements are a separate topic, covered under voice broadcasting.

Answering machine detection FAQ

11 questions, answered

How accurate is answering machine detection?

No detector is right every time, and vendors measure accuracy in different ways, so published figures are hard to compare. Short greetings, background noise and people who answer with a long sentence all confuse it. Test any AMD on your own numbers before trusting it.

Does answering machine detection cause silent calls?

It can. While the software listens, the person who answered hears nothing, and if it wrongly decides they are a machine it may hang up on them. Both experiences feel like a silent or abandoned call, which regulators such as Ofcom say callers should not make.

Does The Auto Dialer have answering machine detection?

No. The Auto Dialer has no answering machine detection. It places one call at a time with the caller already listening, so the caller hears a voicemail greeting and decides what to do, usually hanging up and letting the follow-up rules take over.

Which auto dialer works without answering machine detection?

The Auto Dialer works without answering machine detection by design. Because a person is on every call from the first ring, there is no guess to get wrong; a ring limit and a minimum call length stop voicemail answers from being counted as finished leads.

What is an answering machine detection API?

It is a feature offered by internet telephony providers to developers: when their platform places a call, it returns a result such as human, machine or unknown, and the developer’s code decides whether to connect an agent, play a message or hang up.

How does answering machine detection work?

The system listens to the first seconds after pickup and compares what it hears with patterns: a short hello followed by silence suggests a person, while a long unbroken greeting or a beep suggests a mailbox. It returns human, machine or unknown, and the dialer acts on that label.

Is there open source answering machine detection?

Yes. Open-source telephony servers and code repositories include detection modules built on greeting length and silence timing, and some projects train speech models. They still need tuning on real traffic, and the same false-positive risk applies: a live person handled as a machine.

Do answering machines still exist?

Standalone tape or digital machines are rare now, but the job lives on as network voicemail on mobiles and landlines. For a dialer that changes nothing: a mailbox greeting is still a recording that answers the call, which is exactly what detection tries to spot.

Why do some calls go silent after I say hello?

Often because a dialer is still deciding whether you are a person or a machine, or because it has no agent free to connect you. Some systems then hang up. Calls placed one at a time by someone holding the phone do not have that pause.

Can answering machine detection be turned off?

On platforms that offer it, usually yes, campaign by campaign. Switching it off means agents hear voicemail greetings themselves, which costs some seconds per mailbox but removes the risk of hanging up on live people and shortens the gap after hello.

Does answering machine detection work with voicemail drop?

The two are often paired: once detection labels a call as a machine, the system waits for the tone and plays a recorded message. Because that message is a recording, check the rules on recorded calls in each country you ring first. The Auto Dialer offers neither feature.
