Call Disposition Codes: A Starter List and How to Keep It Short

A call disposition is the outcome you record when a call ends. This guide gives a starter set of codes, the habits that bloat a list, and how The Auto Dialer turns each outcome into a lead status.

Call disposition meaning

Call disposition is the decision recorded at the end of a call about what that call achieved and what should happen next. In contact centres it is a code chosen during wrap-up; in a small sales team it is often a word scribbled beside a number. The Auto Dialer makes it part of the call itself. When a call ends, an after-call sheet appears, and the caller sets the lead status, types or speaks a remark and books a follow-up in about 2 taps. The statuses are not a fixed vendor list: you create them, rename them, give them colours and drag them into order, and a status cannot be deleted while leads still carry it, so old reports never point at a missing code. A status change can also send its own automatic WhatsApp message, which means a disposition can trigger the next step instead of only describing the last one.

Call disposition codes list

Start with outcomes that each lead to a different next action. If two codes lead to the same action, merge them.

Eight codes cover most outbound lists. Add a ninth only when a report needs it. The connected, missed and rejected states are already known to the phone, which is why The Auto Dialer files them in the call log filters automatically and leaves the caller to judge only what the phone cannot. Any number that keeps failing to connect ends up on a lost leads list, ready for a later round with automatic redial rules.

Call disposition examples

A disposition and a remark do different jobs. The disposition is the category you count; the remark is the sentence the next caller reads. "Call back" plus the remark "at a wedding, asked for Thursday after 6" is far more useful than either alone. In The Auto Dialer the remark appears on screen during the next call, and the call reminder sounds on Thursday evening even if the phone is locked. For more on pacing those return calls, see follow-up calls in sales.

Call disposition in a call centre

Large call centres often carry long code lists, sometimes dictated by a client contract, and supervisors read disposition reports through the shift. Outsourcing firms that need per-client code sets should read dialer choices for a BPO. A smaller team gains more from a short list everyone uses than from a long one nobody trusts, and from seeing outcomes beside the call itself: the telecalling CRM page shows how status, remarks and reminders sit on one lead record. Each finished lead also appears in a Done tab with how it was completed: by the auto dialer, by click to call from a computer, marked done by hand, or transferred to a colleague.

Call disposition setup in The Auto Dialer

  1. Open the lead status pipeline and create or rename statuses until they match your outcome list.
  2. Drag them into the order a caller should see, with the most common outcomes first.
  3. Give each a colour, so a filtered lead list reads at a glance.
  4. Optionally attach an automatic WhatsApp message to a status, such as a thank-you note with your details for "Interested".
  5. Set the minimum call length, so a two-second connection does not count as a worked lead.
  6. Run a calling session. The sheet appears after each call; pick the status, add a remark, set the follow-up.

Call disposition report example

Round numbers for illustration only, not a customer result.

An admissions counsellor at a training institute in Lagos calls 100 enquiries on Tuesday. The day ends with 45 no answers, 10 busy, 5 wrong numbers and 40 conversations. Of the 40, 12 are interested, 18 asked for a call back, 8 declined and 2 asked not to be called again. Because each outcome leads somewhere, the follow-up is already planned before she goes home: 18 reminders are set, 12 students receive the course details through the status message, 2 numbers are excluded, and the 55 unreached numbers wait for a retry. Her manager reads the same split from the filter, without asking for a spreadsheet. To see what that day means in hours, try the calls per hour calculator.

Call disposition limits

In The Auto Dialer the outcome lives on the lead as its status, with a full history of changes, and call attempts sit in the call history beside it. If a client contract requires a separate code stamped on every individual dial, with codes that differ per campaign, test that requirement in the trial or use a contact centre platform built around campaign reporting. The app also does not guess outcomes from the audio (there is no answering machine detection); a person chooses each one. Outbound teams worried about calls that connect to nobody should read about the abandoned call rate, a different measure from disposition. Call disposition FAQ

11 questions, answered

What does call disposition mean?

It means the recorded result of a phone call: the label a caller or the system gives the call once it ends, such as no answer, interested or wrong number. Think of it as deciding what happens to the call, and the lead, next.

What is disposition in a call center?

In a call centre, disposition is the wrap-up step after each call. The agent picks an outcome code before the next call arrives, and supervisors use those codes to report on campaigns, plan callbacks and remove people who asked not to be called again.

What is a non-dispositioned call?

A non-dispositioned call is one that ended without anyone recording an outcome. It shows up in reports as a gap: nobody knows whether the person was reached, so the lead is easily forgotten. Making the outcome a required step after each call prevents it.

Does The Auto Dialer record a call disposition after every call?

Yes. The Auto Dialer opens an after-call sheet when each call ends, where the caller picks the lead status, adds a remark and sets a follow-up in about two taps. That status is the disposition, and its history stays on the lead.

Which call disposition setup works on a mobile phone?

The Auto Dialer gives a phone-based team a disposition step without a desk system: the outcome list is your own lead status pipeline, and the sheet appears after calls placed by the dialer or, in CRM team mode, after calls made from the phone’s own dialer.

How many call disposition codes should I have?

Fewer than most teams start with. A list a caller can scan in a couple of seconds, roughly eight to twelve outcomes, gets used honestly. Long lists lead to everyone picking the first plausible option, which makes the reports less accurate rather than more.

Why is call disposition important?

Because the outcome decides the next step. Without it, a callback is missed, a wrong number gets rung again and someone who asked not to be called stays on the list. Dispositions are also the only dependable count of what a calling day actually achieved.

What are some call disposition examples?

Typical ones are no answer, busy, wrong number, call back later, interested, not interested, do not call and sale made. Many teams add a code for their sector, such as appointment booked for a clinic or payment promised for collections, provided it leads to its own next action.

What is the difference between a disposition and a call status?

In many systems they overlap. A call status can be technical, such as connected or failed, while a disposition is the business result chosen afterwards. The Auto Dialer stores the business result as the lead’s status, and its call log separately records connected, missed and rejected calls.

Can a call disposition trigger an automatic action?

In The Auto Dialer it can. Every lead status, custom ones included, can send its own WhatsApp message automatically when a lead moves into it, and a follow-up set on the same sheet rings like an alarm at the chosen time, even on a locked phone.

Should system and agent dispositions be kept separate?

Yes. Outcomes the network already knows, such as unanswered, busy or rejected, should be captured automatically, leaving people to judge only what needs a human: interest, objections, callbacks. Mixing the two invites agents to choose a technical code and skip the harder judgement.
