Word for word

Cold Calling Script You Can Read Word for Word, Start to Finish

This cold calling script is written to be read aloud as it stands, for calls to businesses or to people with a reason to hear from you. The Auto Dialer adapted it from how good callers actually talk.

Cold calling script structure

A cold calling script is a set of lines that carries a stranger from "who is this?" to a clear yes or no in a few minutes, without pressure or pretence. The version on this page has six parts. The opener is about 30 words long, which takes roughly 12 seconds at a normal speaking pace of around 150 words a minute (30 divided by 150 is a fifth of a minute), so the listener knows who is calling and why before they decide to hang up. A permission line comes straight after, because a busy person forced to listen remembers the pressure, not the product. Discovery uses one or two questions, not a checklist. The close asks for something small and dated. Every line is honest: no fake familiarity, no invented urgency, no claim that the person asked to be called when they did not. Square brackets mark the parts you change. Delivery matters as much as wording; these cold calling tips cover pace, timing and tone.

Cold calling script for sales

Use this for a first call to a business that plausibly needs what you sell.

  1. Opener: "Hello, is this [Name]? Hi [Name], this is [Your name] from [Company]. We help [type of business] with [problem you solve], and I am calling because [one specific reason about them]."
  2. Permission: "I know I am calling out of the blue. Would you be happy for me to take two minutes now, or is there a better time to ring back?"
  3. Discovery: "How do you handle [the problem] at the moment?" Then: "What is the most annoying part of that?"
  4. Relevance: "Thanks, that helps. Other [type of business] we work with had the same issue with [their words], and what we do is [one sentence]."
  5. Next step: "Would it be worth a fifteen-minute call on [day] to show you how it would work for you? I can also email a short summary first."
  6. Close if yes: "Great, I have you down for [day and time]. I will send the details to [email or WhatsApp] today. Thank you, [Name]."
  7. Close if no: "Understood, and thank you for being clear. I will not call you about this again. Have a good day."

Cold calling script for consumers

Calls to private individuals face the strictest rules, so use this only for people with a genuine link to you, such as a past customer or someone who left their number at your stand, and only where your local rules allow it.

  1. "Hello, may I speak to [Name]? This is [Your name] from [Company]. You [visited our stand at the home show / bought a water purifier from us last year], and I am calling about [reason]."
  2. "Is this an all right moment, or should I call another time?"
  3. "Are you still interested in [topic], or has that changed?"
  4. "If it is useful, I can [send the price on WhatsApp / book a free check]. Which would suit you?"
  5. "Thank you. If you would rather not get calls from us, just say so and I will make sure it does not happen again."

Industry versions of this structure exist for insurance cold calls and for property sellers and buyers. For what to say on the second and third attempt, move on to the follow-up call script. New callers can read how to be a good telecaller before their first session.

Cold calling script example

Round numbers chosen for illustration; not data from a real campaign.

The owner of a small web design studio in Toronto wants to reach 40 independent restaurants that have no online booking. Calls to business consumers fall outside Canada's National Do Not Call List rules, though the other telemarketing rules still apply. She loads the 40 numbers, reads the opener, and asks permission each time. Say 15 answer and 5 agree to a short video call. Each "no" is marked so the number is never dialled again, and the 5 meetings become reminders on the day before. The script never changes; only the reason line is rewritten for each restaurant. How a dialer fits this kind of first-contact list is covered under auto dialer for cold calling.

Cold calling script limits

A script does not make an unwanted call acceptable. Remove numbers on the relevant do-not-call list unless you have consent or a valid exception, respect calling hours, and never pretend to be running a survey or to be someone the person knows. In the UK, callers must not withhold their number. In India, TRAI's rules keep telemarketing off ordinary personal mobile numbers, so a SIM-based app such as The Auto Dialer fits calls to your own enquiries and customers there, not cold promotion. The country summaries are under auto dialer and telemarketing law. This is general information, not legal advice. Record each outcome with consistent call disposition labels so you can see which version of the reason line works.

Cold calling script FAQ

11 questions, answered

What is the best cold call opening line?

One that states your name, your company and a reason that is about the listener, then hands control back with a question. For example: "Hi, this is [your name] from [company name]. I noticed you opened a second branch, and I am calling about staff scheduling. Is now a bad time?"

How do you end a cold call?

Repeat the agreed next step with its date, or, if there is none, thank the person and say clearly that you will not call again about it. End before they have to end it for you. Then record the outcome straight away so the promise is not lost.

Can I use this cold calling script in Hindi or another language?

Yes. Translate the meaning rather than the words, and keep the same order: who you are, why you are calling, permission, one question, one next step, a polite close. Read it aloud a few times so it sounds like speech, not a translation.

Is The Auto Dialer useful with a cold calling script?

Yes, for the parts around the script. The Auto Dialer dials the list for you one call at a time, shows any earlier remark when a number answers, and saves the outcome and next call date on the lead in two taps, so you can keep your eyes on the script.

Which dialer lets me add my cold calling notes during the call?

The Auto Dialer opens the lead’s full record during the call, and voice input can fill in names and requirements. The note you save appears again on screen the next time that number calls or is called.

How do you write a cold calling script?

Start from the outcome you want, such as a fifteen-minute meeting, and write backwards: one line asking for it, one question to find the need, one sentence on relevance, a permission check and a ten-second introduction. Read it aloud, cut every word you stumble on, and test it on real calls before changing anything.

What open-ended questions work on a cold call?

Questions that begin with how or what and are about the listener’s situation: “How do you handle bookings at the moment?”, “What happens when a supplier is late?”, “What would make that easier?” Avoid yes-or-no questions in the first minute, because they invite a quick no.

What is a cold calling script for digital marketing?

Keep the six-part structure but tie the reason to something visible, such as “your site has no booking button” or “your last post was months ago”. Ask how they win new customers now, then offer a short audit or one sample idea as the next step rather than pitching a full package on the first call.

Should a cold call opening line be funny?

A light line can work if it is honest and brief, for example admitting “I know this is a cold call, so I will be quick.” Jokes that pretend to know the person or play on fear tend to backfire. Whether or not the listener laughs, the next sentence must still give your name and reason.

How long should a cold calling script be?

Short enough that the opener takes ten to fifteen seconds and the whole planned part under two minutes; the rest of the call should be the other person talking. As a rough check, at about 150 spoken words a minute, a 300-word script would take two minutes just to read (300 divided by 150).

Can I adapt this cold calling script for loan or financial advice calls?

Yes, with care. Keep the structure, but make the reason line refer to a real link, such as an enquiry the person made or an account they hold, and never promise a rate or an approval during the call. Offer to send the eligibility details in writing and agree a time to go through them.
